SCARCE Antique SPRINGFIELD M1840 Flintlock Musket
Last US Flintlock Musket Dated 1842
Here we present an antique Springfield U.S. Model 1840 Flintlock Musket, dated 1842 and made in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Model 1840 was the last flintlock musket adopted in the United States. It was relatively short-lived before the Model 1842 Percussion Musket was introduced. Of the total production of 30,421 1840 Muskets produced, nearly all of them were converted to percussion in the years preceding the American Civil War, making them extremely rare in original configuration, and quite desirable having been reconverted.
This musket has been reconverted to flintlock. The lock is marked “U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1842”. Butt plate is marked “US”. A faint inspector’s cartouche remains on the left side of the stock opposite the lock. The right stock has the initials “MB” carved into it.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are legible. The bore is smooth, dark & dusty. The stock is in good shape with the weathering and handling marks you would expect. The action on this musket is excellent. Here is a great example of a very hard to find US musket to fill the niche in your US Martial collection!
