SCARCE Antique SHARPS & HANKINS Model 1861 COMMERCIAL .52 RF CARBINE
1 of only 100 Civil War Era COMMERCIAL TYPE Made
Here we present an extremely scarce antique Sharps and Hankins Model 1861 Commercial Type Rifle manufactured circa 1861-62 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is one of approximately 100 Sharps & Hankins Model 1861 Commercial rifles produced during its short production run. This is among the scarcest and rarely seen Civil War Martial arms. Roughly 600 of these arms were ordered by the Navy on July 29,1861 with saber bayonets at the cost of $36.00 each. The remaining 100, as is this example, are assumed to have been sold to the civilian market with those also surely being used in the war. Most of the rifles were used to arm Marine guards aboard ships, and some were used on gunboats on the Mississippi River.
The shape of the carbine is distinctly Sharps and operates a bit differently than other carbines of the era. The trigger guard doubles as a lever, which is opened by pressing a small tab inside the smaller loop of the lever. Opening the lever slides the barrel away from the recoil shield for loading and unloading.
The overall condition is good. Dark patina with some disruption to the finish on the right side from being wrapped in something. The action is strong. The bore is in very good condition with strong rifling. The stock shows use and remains solid. Front sight is a period replacement.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
