Product Description

SCARCE Antique REMINGTON-SMOOT New Model .38 Rimfire SPUR TRIGGER Revolver

“WILD WEST” Spur Trigger SUICIDE SPECIAL

Here we present an antique Remington-Smoot New Model No. 3 Revolver in .38 Caliber Rimfire, made circa the mid-1880s in Ilion, New York. One of the finest made belt or pocket-model revolvers of the post-Civil War years, the Remington-Smoot revolvers were part of a line of small handguns that was contemporaneous with Colt’s “New Line” revolver. Both these companies made a quality revolver, but quality costs. The Remington featured an unusual design in which the frame, barrel and ejector housing were all one piece, this making for an extremely strong and durable design that withstood hard use.

The years of production were 1878 to 1888 with approximately 25,000 examples manufactured. This revolver was designed with the armed public in mind, being pocket-sized and holding 5 shots of .38 Rimfire. It is a medium to small frame revolver with an open loading gate and an ejector rod, which many other revolvers in this size-class lacked.

As mentioned above, quality costs. As a result, many small makers began producing much less expensive alternatives that would lovingly become known as “Suicide Specials”. In many cases, these little revolvers did the job, but competition shut down these lines earlier than they may have otherwise. The firearm pre-dates the purchase of the Remington Family-Owned E. Remington & Sons company to Marcellus Harley of Hartley and Graham of New York City, a major sporting goods chain who also owned the Union Metallic Cartridge Company and the Winchester Repeating Arms Company.

The overall condition is fine. Original nickel finish. Excellent action. The bore is in good shape for its age and has maintained visible rifling. Both grips are seated firmly and contain average handling wear. Sharp lettering.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-3/4 inches.

Caliber: .38 Rimfire Short

Overall condition as seen in photos.
