Product Description

SCARCE Antique CIVIL WAR US Remington Model 1863 “ZOUAVE” Percussion Rifle

1 of 12,501 Made 1863-1865 with SABER BAYONET

Here we present an antique Model 1863 Percussion Contract Rifle manufactured by the Remington Arms Co., circa 1863-65, in Ilion, New York. Referred to by collectors as the “Zouave” rifle, the Model 1863 Contract Rifle was an improved version of the U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1855 Rifle. The Model 1863 Rifle was referred to in official documents as the “Harpers Ferry Pattern” rifle. The Model 1863 Rifle has the distinction of being the last percussion rifle adopted by the Ordnance Department and is generally considered to be the highest quality and best designed percussion military longarm. The barrel has a military blue finish. The hammer and lock are casehardened. The screws and band springs have a niter blue finish.

The forend cap, barrel bands, trigger guard, patch box and buttplate are brass. The stock is oil finished black walnut. The rifle has a heavy round barrel with wide-base iron front sight and 1855 style rear sight with two folding blades. The right side of the barrel muzzle has a lug for the included saber bayonet. The bright finished straight shank tulip head ramrod is secured by a spring in the stock. The brass patch box is similar to the style used on the Model 1855. The lock plate is dated “1863” behind the hammer and roll stamped with the Federal Eagle and Shield motif above “U.S.”. “REMINGTON’S/ILION N.Y” is roll stamped in two lines ahead of the hammer. The “Model 1863 Zouave” nickname is of unclear origins, and whether or not any of these rifles saw use in the war remains unclear and debated.

The overall condition is fine. Original finish. Excellent action. Bright and nicely rifled bore. Very good stock overall, and it remains solid throughout with two visible cartouches on the left flat. “1863” dated lock. “US” marked lock and butt plate tang. Fantastic saber bayonet. This is a one of the most handsome rifle-muskets ever adopted by US Ordnance. It was shorter than most, contributing to its ease of use and carry, and had the more useful bayonet that helped make it long enough again for bayonet charges and the nasty close work. It even had a better front sight for shooting more precisely at distance. One of the best!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 33 inches.

Caliber: .58 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
