SCARCE Antique BRITISH .41 Caliber Percussion SWIVEL BARREL Double Deringer
ENGRAVED Double Barrel Over/Under
Here we present an antique English Swivel Barrel Over/Under Percussion Pistol made circa the 1850s likely in Birmingham, England. This would have been intended as a self-defense gun. The engravings on the frame of this pistol show that it was marketed to someone who wanted more than just a tool. The over/under configuration is highlighted by two separate percussion chambers, one in each barrel. In its day, this little two shot over/under percussion pistol would have been a very handy self-defense weapon to have around, having two shots to fire off instead of one! This pistol was likely worn on one’s belt or carried in a coat pocket!
It would have been most at home in the pocket of anyone in the busy cities of London, Liege, or Paris during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s. These type pistols are small, light and simple. The “Pocket Pistol” name says it all. They were the “Saturday Night Specials” of the 16th-19th century. Before the Deringer, they were “Gentleman’s” or “Muff Pistols”, typically, a smaller pistol that was easily concealed. They were favored among the gentry and women because of these traits. Men would carry them concealed in a waistcoat pocket and women would hide them in a hand muff.
The overall condition is good. Gray patina. The action remains strong. The bores are smooth and patinaed. The barrel assembly swivels easily. There is a bit of wobble between the frame and barrels.
