SCARCE Antique BELGIAN PINFIRE Double Action Folding Trigger KNIFE Pistol
Pistol/Knife Combo with NICKEL FINISH & HORN GRIPS
Here we present an antique Liege Proofed Pinfire Double Action Folding Trigger Pocket Knife Pistol made circa the late1840s to early 1850s in Liege, Belgium. This unique knife gun features a 3-1/2 inch folding blade and chambered in 5mm caliber Pinfire with a nickel finish and a horn grip. The barrel is marked “Breveté SGDG”. Breveté SGDG was a French type of patent that ceased to exist in 1968. The name was a common abbreviation for “Breveté Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement“ (patent without government guarantees). France and Belgium maintained a system of simple registration of patents. It was believed that patents registered in this way are free from any liability from the government perspective.
Single and double-barrel knife/pistol combinations like this are fairly uncommon. Most date to the 1840s and 1850s, when a lot of people still didn’t trust the newfangled revolvers or even pepperboxes. With the exception of some made in England, most carried no makers’ markings at all. Belgium and Germany were the main source of these types on the European Continent.
The overall condition is good. The action function, although the trigger return spring is a little weak and requires assistance to reset. Good bore (aged). The grip/stock is in good shape (stable crack on the right side). Liege proofed cylinder. The knife is in good shape and has retained an edge.
