SCARCE Antique AMERICAN ARMS .32 Cal. Rimfire SWIVEL BARREL Double Deringer
1 of less than 5,000 Produced & Made in Boston!
Here we present an antique American Arms Company Swivel Barrel Double Deringer, made circa 1866, in Boston, Massachusetts. Production began shortly after the close of the American Civil War and lasted through the late 1870s, seeing only about 3,500 to 5,000 total produced during that time. Deringers of all sorts had by then become a common mode of pocket-sized firepower, though small revolvers were quickly eclipsing the single shot design. H.F. Wheeler was the man responsible for this design, which featured superposed double barrels that swiveled to access the next shot.
This specimen features both barrels chambered in .32 rimfire. The “top” barrel flat on one side reads “AMERICAN ARMS CO. BOSTON. MASS.”, and the other side reads “WHEELER’S PAT. OCT. 31 1865 JUNE 19 1866”. Each side has its own front sight, made of German silver. The serial number is “5075” on the bottom of the grip frame with a matching number inside the right grip panel.
The overall condition is very good. Strong action. Both bores are in very good shape. Solid rosewood grips with expected wear. Sharp lettering throughout. Here is a great example of a rare and novel swivel-barrel Deringer.
