ROARING TWENTIES “Secret Service Special” .38 S&W DOUBLE ACTION Revolver
Small Early 20th Century CONCEAL & CARRY Revolver
Here we present a C&R Double Action Top Break “Secret Service Special” Revolver in .38 caliber, made circa the Roaring Twenties era. There were three American companies that marked their revolvers known as the “Secret Service Special”. They were Iver Johnson, Harrington & Richardson, and Meriden Firearms. The distinct feature of one made by Iver Johnson is the manual safety on the frame. Neither H&R nor Meriden used a safety. These revolvers were based on another Iver Johnson brand, the U.S. Revolver Company and were contract revolvers made for a wholesaler/distributer called the Fred Biffar Company out of Chicago, Illinois. This revolver was designed to be small and concealable for self-defense in the years leading up to and including the Roaring Twenties.
This revolver is chambered for 5 shots of .38 S&W. The action works in both double and single action. The left side of the barrel is marked “SECRET SERVICE SPECIAL” and the top of the barrel is marked “FOR .38 SMITH & WESSON CTGS”.
The overall condition is good. Dark brown patina. The actions partially functions in double action as the return spring is weak and requires manual reset. Does not function in single action. Mostly bright bore with various spots of pitting and serviceable rifling. Visible markings are legible. Visible numbers match.
