RIDABOCK & CO. Antique Non-Regulation Light Cavalry Style Saber w/SCABBARD
American Sword w/BRASS GUARD & NICKEL SCABBARD
Here we present an antique Non-Regulation Ridabock & Co. Light Cavalry Style Saber manufactured in New York, New York. Ridabock & Company evolved in 1847, taking over for the J. H. McKenney (Baker & McKenney) Company of New York. They manufactured military goods, including rifles, Swords, insignia, saddles, and various types of headwear as well as many other accoutrements, such as fireman uniform buttons and hearse flags. This example resembles the Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber. The 1860 was a lighter and nimbler successor to the 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber. The M1860 went on to be used by cavalry during the Indian Wars and even in the Spanish-American War. The Ames Mfg. Company alone produced 200,000 of these swords, with other contractors fulfilling several tens of thousands each. The overall length is 36-3/4 inches with the blade measuring 32 inches. It sports a brass hilt, wire wrapped leather grip, and a nickel scabbard.
The 1840 saber was used during the Mexican–American War by U.S. Cavalry. The main contractors were Ames of Cabotville, Horstmann, and Tiffany but due to the large number of swords required at least 1,000 were made in Germany by S&K and imported. Some troopers used Prussian sabers as an alternative, which in contrast to the Model 1840 had straight blades. When production ceased in 1858 over 23,700 had been made. During the American Civil War, it continued to be issued to Union Cavalry as in the early years it was more readily available than the Model 1860. Many were also used by the Confederacy including General Nathan Bedford Forrest who had both edges of his sword sharpened to increase combat effectiveness.
The overall condition is good. The blade is etched with traditional American symbols and has retained a semi-bright shimmer. Solid hilt with tightly wrapped brass wire. Good scabbard. Markings are legible.
