REVOLUTIONARY WAR HENRY COLLICOTT of Bristol FLINTLOCK Pistol MASK POMMEL
ENGRAVED & CARVED Martial Pistol for an Officer
Here we present an antique Revolutionary War Era British Engraved & Carved Flintlock Martial Pistol, made by Henry Collicott of Bristol in Gloucestershire circa 1750 to 1780, when he was known as being an active gunmaker whose pistols normally were brass barreled flintlock holster pistols.
This pistol is fairly large and has a .58 caliber bore and was intended for martial use. It has a brass barrel with “BRISTOL” featuring large on the top of the barrel. The lock is marked with the maker’s name “COLLICOTT”. A panoply side plate and thumb plate, the grotesque mask pommel, and the carved stock make this a handsome piece. This would have been the type of pistol an officer purchased on his own to bring to battle in case he was to come into contact with the enemy. With this pistol being from the Revolutionary War era, it was possibly, if not likely, carried over by a British officer or soldier coming to stop the rebellion of the American Colonies.
Overall condition is very good. Original flintlock. Patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth and in very good condition. The stock shows use and remains solid. The sideplate, trigger guard, and grotesque pommel are all German silver. The barrel is brass and is swamped at the muzzle. The stock is carved with a German silver thumb plate.
