Here we present an antique Samuel Harvey Revolutionary War Era “Hanger” Style Sword, made circa the mid to late-1700s in Birmingham, England. This weapon, a popular sidearm of the 17th and 18th centuries, is more than just a mere knife. With its distinctive slightly curved blade and typically single-edged design, it’s much more than just your run-of-the-mill type of sword. With a blade measuring 24-1/2 inches in length, it boasts a grip that offers a snug fit to the hand. Its guard, often incorporating a knuckle-guard, provided added protection. These swords, while simple in design, were perfect for quick thrusts and cuts.

The hanger swords origin and can be traced back to the early days of the 17th century. As wars and skirmishes raged, the need for a light, quick, and efficient weapon led to the hanger’s rise in popularity. Naval forces often favored the hanger for its utility, especially during the American Revolution. The hanger was the perfect blend of the powerful falchion’s design and the quick agility of shorter blades. Given its efficient design and combat versatility, it’s no wonder the hanger remained highly popular throughout the 18th century.

This 18th century Revolutionary War era “hanger” style sword has a 24 1/2″ blade marked with a running fox and “SH” on both sides. The overall length is 30-1/2 inches. The latter is the maker’s mark of Birmingham, England, cutler Samuel Harvey active in the second half of the 18th century.

The overall condition is good. Sightly curved blade with a dark patina. There is a maker’s mark of a fox and a “SH” on either side of the blade. The hilt is solid. The wire wrap is present and in good condition.
