Here we present an antique Retailer D. Abbate & F. DeCaro Marked Model 1840 Non- Commissioned Officers Sword, made circa the Civil War Era. This is a known retailer of these and other U.S. Military swords in New York City. Most likely the sword was only finished and assembled by the company, who also would personalize items if desired by the purchaser.
The Model 1840 NCO was issued to sergeants as a secondary weapon. It saw use primarily during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. This nice sword has an overall length of 34-3/4 inches with a straight blade length of 29”. It has a brass hilt, wire wrapped leather grip, and a nickel scabbard.
The overall condition is very good. Bright blade. The markings are legible. Solid hilt overall, and the brass twisted wire is tight. Good nickel finished scabbard.
