RED CLOUD SIOUX “PADDY STAR” Tack WINCHESTER 1892 .32-20 SRC C&R Grangaard
RED CLOUD BAD FACE ITE-SICA BAND OGLALA LAKOTA SIOUX
Here we present a C&R Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine chambered in .32-20 WCF, made circa the turn of the century in New Haven, Connecticut. Because there is no visible serial number on this example, it must be listed as C&R, though with the history behind this example, it was likely the early to mid-1890s. This rifle was no doubt owned by Paddy Star of Red Cloud’s Bad Face Ite-Sica band of the Oglala Lakota Sioux tribe. Red Cloud was a leader of the Oglala Lakota from 1865 to 1909. He was one of the most capable Native American opponents whom the United States Army faced in the western territories. He led the Lakota to defeat the United States during Red Cloud’s War, establishing the Lakota as the only nation besides the British to defeat the United States on American soil. The largest action of the war was the 1866 Fetterman Fight, with 81 U.S. soldiers killed. It was the worst military defeat suffered by the U.S. Army on the Great Plains until the Battle of the Little Bighorn 10 years later. The history of Paddy Star is included in the photo section of this listing, including his involvement at the Wounded Knee Massacre. He was contracted to bury those killed at Wounded Knee at $2.00/body. He drew a map of what happened at Wounded Knee, which a copy is included here.
The Model 1892 was another fantastic design from the mind of John Moses Browning, the 1892 was made to replace the venerable and iconic 1873 and featured its pistol caliber chamberings. The result was a trim and light rifle that was an immediate hit and stayed in production for almost 50 years. Many gun owners favored Winchester rifles for their ability to fire the same ammunition as their pistols, meaning that a cowboy, trapper or stagecoach defender could take along his trust rifle and pistol sidearm with only one supply of ammo!
The overall condition is good. Even patina throughout. Clearly weathered and hard used. The action is strong. The bore is dim with worn rifling. There have been some repairs to the fore end and the butt stock. Replaced rear sight, homemade. Interesting tack décor on the right side of the butt stock.
