Rare Pennsylvania DOUBLE LONG RIFLE by LEWIS N. DONHAM .34 Caliber Antique
Of Greensboro, Greene County, PA; SxS
Here we present an antique Lewis N. Donham Percussion Double Rifle, made circa the mid-19th century in Greensboro, Greene County, Pennsylvania. Lewis Newton Donham (April 1, 1833–August 6, 1902) was a gunsmith from Greene County, PA, right on the Monongahela River. He apprenticed under Barney Engle who was an uncle in the 1870s. He worked for some time in Bowlby, near Morgantown, West Virginia. He was known for his engraving in German silver. In addition to this side by side double rifle, he is known to have made a superposed rifle with revolving barrels. In addition, he is said to have taught school, been twice married, and fathered 14 children. He was making guns up until the time of his death in 1902. A busy man!
This rifle is unique for its day. Nevermind that metallic cartridge breechloaders were now the order of the day. When he was learning his trade in the 1870s Winchester was already producing the Models 1866, 1873, 1876, not to mention Sharps, Remington, or many other makers. Rather than superposed barrels, these are side by side, the former being much more common in North America. This is definitely rather scarce, but even scarcer is that each barrel has its own complete set of sights, front and rear. The barrels are signed “L.N. Donham/Greensboro Pa.” Double set triggers. The butt stock has a patch box in the side and a small, narrow compartment on the underside of the stock.
The overall condition is very good. Nice patina throughout. The action on the left is strong. The action on the right has good spring tension and you can feel both the half-cock and full-cock notches but the hammer does not hold in those notches. The double set trigger works well. The bores are dim with visible rifling. The stock is smooth and solid with bright German silver accents throughout. This is a very attractive piece by a maker who was known in Pennsylvania and West Virginia!
