Here we present an antique Bacon & Company Percussion Underhammer Boot Pistol, manufactured circa 1847-1857 in Norwich, Connecticut. This is one of the estimated 500 underhammer boot pistols manufactured in the years leading up to the American Civil War, during the Bacon & Company’s existence. History appears to show that Bacon went into the firearms production business on his own, forming Bacon & Company in Norwich somewhere around 1847, which he ran until 1857.
The 4-inch barrel is marked “BACON & CO. NORWICH C-T”. The history that these pistols enjoyed over the years is astounding: the Seminole Wars, Gold Rush, Mexican War and American Civil War. The boot pistol was considered one of the ultimate personal defense weapons of the day as it could be inserted and concealed in a man’s boot for easy quick access. These guns are true relics of American history. The overall condition is good. Gray patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is dim with strong rifling. The left grip bears the initial “H”. The bottom of the right grip has a short crack.
