Here we present an antique Spencer Patent Burnside Contract Model 1865 Conversion to a Rifle by Springfield Armory. This was formerly a carbine made circa 1865 by contract by the Burnside Rifle Company in Providence, Rhode Island before it was re-armored by Springfield circa 1871 for issuance to infantry. Only about 1,108 received this treatment. It received a 32 ½ inch barrel in .50 caliber with the 3-groove rifling and long forend secured by 2 barrel bands as well as the Stabler magazine cutoff (this was part of developing military doctrine of the time—the thought was that too much ammo would be expended in these new repeating rifles). This could have been viewed as an upgrade for a grunt lugging around the Trapdoor rifles of the time that were powerful, but only single shot, whereas the Spencer still packed plenty of punch but with 7 in the rear-feed magazine tube.

The overall condition is fine. Original armory finish. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The walnut stock is in great shape, showing signs of use and remaining solid and smooth overall. Clear “ESA” Erskine S. Allin cartouche behind the sling ring bar. Numbers match.
