Rare CIVIL WAR Era REMINGTON-BEALS Early 1st Model .31 Percussion REVOLVER
Remington’s FIRST PRODUCTION REVOLVER SERIAL #40
Here we present a rare antique Remington-Beals Percussion Revolver, manufactured circa 1856-1858 at the Remington Armory in Ilion, New York. Fordyce Beals (1807-1870) was a firearms engineer who worked both for the Whitneyville Armory and then the Remington Armory in the mid-1850s. During his time at Remington, he developed what would become the Remington-Beals 1st Model, a 5-shot percussion pocket revolver which appeared in mid to late-1856, which was Remington’s first revolver. This .31 caliber revolver featured a 3-inch octagon barrel with the cylinder turning mechanism mounted on the left outside of the frame. It had blue case hardened frame, a silver plated brass trigger guard, and gutta-percha grips. There were approximately 5,000 manufactured during its three year production run.
Though this design allowed Remington to break into the civilian gun market, it was more prominent as a revolver that saw service with both sides of the American Civil War. The gun’s design is typical of the period. The grip is integral and covered in wood for comfort, and the solid frame added robustness to the design. Its compact dimensions were respectable, especially with discerning buyers seeking concealment for their firearms.
Though not a primary military arm during the American Civil War, these handguns were commonly privately purchased by soldiers for use on the battlefield. Whether legend or fact, it is interesting to note something commonly read about pocket revolvers of the day, that while they could be used for self-defense against the enemy, many soldiers kept them on their person to defend themselves against an unwanted amputation in the primitive field hospitals that were notorious, even in their day.
The overall condition is good. The action of the hammer and trigger are strong but the cylinder does not index or lock up properly. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The front sight is absent. The grip has a split on the bottom.
