Here we present an antique Unmarked Model 1840 Pattern Non-Commissioned Officers Sword, made circa 1864. The Model 1840 NCO was issued to sergeants as a secondary weapon. It saw use primarily during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War.
The Model 1840 NCO was issued to sergeants as a secondary weapon. The tradition of arming sergeants with swords as a badge of rank was an old one in the army and sometimes would extend to the rank of corporal in the volunteer regiments.
The overall condition is good. The blade has a nice gray patina. The tip is slightly bent. There is a bit of a wiggle in the hand guard around the tang. The brass wire remains tight around the grip. Good scabbard.
Overall length is 35-1/2 inches.
Blade length is 29-3/4 inches.
