Non-Commissioned Officers Sword in the UNION ARMY
Here we present an antique Ames Manufacturing Co. U.S. Model 1840 Non- Commissioned Officers Sword, made in 1865 in Chicopee, Massachusetts. The Model 1840 NCO was issued to sergeants as a secondary weapon. It saw use primarily during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War.
This 1865 dated Ames Model 1840 NCO sword has a 32” straight blade with an overall length of 36-1/2”. The left side is marked “Made By / AMES MFg. Co. / CHICOPEE / MASS (faint)”. The right ricasso is marked “US/JF/1865”. The inspection initials on the guard read “ADK” for Andrew D. King. King was a U.S. Ordnance Sub-Inspector from 1850 through the end of the Civil War in 1865 at the Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts.
The overall condition is good. The blade has a nice gray patina, and is slightly bent towards the tip. Solid hilt. Clear and legible markings.
