Rare CIVIL WAR Dated Antique C. ROBY U.S. Model 1860 Light CAVALRY SABER
American Civil War Cavalry Blade
Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, made circa 1863 in West Chelmsford, Massachusetts by the Christopher Roby Company. Christopher Roby maintained a steady business making items like scythes and other farm implements until the embargo on the South during the American Civil War caused him to seek other product lines to make ends meet. In 1862 he began contracting with the U.S. to provide several different models of sword. His wartime production of swords numbered 48,410 compared to hundreds of thousands produced by companies like Ames. Roby was commissioned on September 5, 1864 to raise up his own local cavalry, of which he was elected Captain, to be protectors against Confederate raids in northern Massachusetts. Unfortunately, the company was bankrupt by 1867, a mere 2 years after the end of the war. The overall length is 40-1/2 inches with the blade measuring 34-3/4 inches. This saber would have been used in the American Civil War by Union Horsemen.
“US/1864/AGM” is marked on the right ricasso and “C ROBY / W. CHELMSFORD / MASS.” is marked on the left. It features a brass guard, a wire wrapped leather grip, a leather sword knot, and an iron scabbard with a belt hanger.
The overall condition is very good. Straight blade with mild patina. Clear markings. The hilt is solid. The original leather and braided wire grip wrap is intact. Martially inspected. The leather hander and knot are in great shape for their age. The scabbard is an even plum color, with some minor denting.
