Rare CIVIL WAR Brass H.C. LOMBARD & CO. Single Shot .22 RF DERINGER Pistol
Under 1,000 Deringer Pocket Pistol Manufactured
Here we present an antique H.C. Lombard & Co. Single Shot Deringer Pistol, made circa 1860 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The total number believed to have been made does not exceed 1,000, making this a rare little pistol. It was designed to be a very simple, easy to use and concealable pocket firearm. These diminutive .22s were handy to most people during a time when the necessity of protecting oneself was a given.
The top of the barrel reads “H.C. LOMBARD & CO. SPRINGFIELD MASS.”. It has a half moon front sight and the standard one line address on the top barrel flat.
Though not a primary military arm during the American Civil War, these types of handguns were commonly privately purchased by soldiers for use on the battlefield. Whether legend or fact, it is interesting to note something commonly read about pocket pistols of the day, that while they could be used for self-defense against the enemy, many soldiers kept them on their person to defend themselves against an unwanted amputation in the primitive field hospitals that were notorious, even in their day.
Overall condition is good. Strong action. Good bore for its age. Solid grips despite the thin cracks on the right side. Markigns are legible. A slight wiggle is present in the barrel at the swivel screw. The hammer spur has been shortened.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
