RARE Antique FOREHAND & WADSWORTH .38 RF Falling Block DROP BREECH Rifle
1870s-80s SINGLE SHOT Rifle
Here we present an antique Forehand & Wadsworth Drop Breech Single Shot Falling Block Rifle, made circa the 1870s-80s in Worchester, Massachusetts. In 1871, Sullivan Forehand and Henry C. Wadsworth founded Forehand & Wadsworth from the remnants of Ethan Allen & Company after the death of their father-in-law, successful firearms inventor and manufacturer from the 1830s, Ethan Allen.
These drop breech rimfire rifles were manufactured first by Allen & Wheelock and Ethan Allen & Co. in the 1860s to 1870 and then by Forehand & Wadsworth in the 1870s and 1880s. Production was limited and only a couple thousand are believed to have been manufactured. It is marked “FOREHAND & WADSWORTH/ WORCHESTER.MASS./ PATENTED SEPT. 18. 1860” on the top of the frame with no other visible markings. It features a blade front sight and a notch & folding leaf rear sight,
Wadsworth sold his share of the company to Forehand in 1890 in order to retire, and the company was rebranded as Forehand Arms.
