RARE 1865 Date Antique REMINGTON CONTRACT Model 1863 Rifle-Musket CIVIL WAR
One of 40,000 Made Late War for the Union Army
Here we present an antique Model 1863 Rifle-Musket manufactured by the Remington Arms Co., circa 1865, in Ilion, New York. A total of 40,000 Model 1863 rifle-muskets were delivered by Remington during the closing years of the Civil War. The lockplate is dated 1865 behind the hammer and features the “Federal Eagle” over “U.S.” ahead of the hammer. It has “REMINGTON’S / ILION, N.Y.’ below the unique bolster.
The US Model 1861/63 was the “everyman’s” rifle during the war for the Union. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1861 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike a solid, round ball. Almost immediately after the war, the US military switched from the old muzzle loading type weapons to the newer breech loading rifles, bringing an end to the musket as a standard frontline firearm in American history.
The overall condition is good+. Even brown patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is dim with good rifling. The walnut stock shows use and remains solid throughout. The leather sling is older but not as old as the musket and is in good condition.
