Here we present an antique Civil War U.S. Navy Model 1861 Flare Gun/Signal Pistol manufactured in 1864. One of 1,000 Navy Model 1861 Signal Pistols manufactured at the U.S. Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. These were used to signal with the use of B.T. Coston flare cartridges which were multicolored—different color combinations contained various meanings. Communication amongst forces in wartime was just as important then as it is now. This is one of the sundry ways that they were able to accomplish this whether by land or sea!
