PRESTON, ENGLAND JAMES BURROW 12 Gauge SxS Percussion SHOTGUN BRITISH Antique
DAMASCUS BARRELS, ENGRAVING, BLACK POWDER
Here we present an antique British James Burrow Side by Side Percussion Shotgun, manufactured circa the mid to late 1850s in Preston, England. Preston, situated north of Liverpool on the Ribble Estuary, became wealthy in the early to mid-1800s through both industry and its activities as a port. James Burrow is listed as a gunmaker at 26 Friargate in Preston, Lancashire beginning in 1817. It shows him moving to 116 Fishergate, where this gun was made, in 1854 and continuing until 1870. Sometime in the early 1900s the business was renamed to James Burrow Ltd. and continued until 1932.
This 12 gauge shotgun was made for hunting game in the forest or protecting the family homestead. Its mid-length 29-1/8 inch barrel made for easy hunting in the dense woods or traipsing through the marsh looking for ducks and geese. This would have been a staple of most homesteads hanging over the mantle during the mid-1800s.
The overall condition is fine. Wonderful Damascus pattern on the barrels. Clear engravings and markings. The actions are excellent and tight. The hammer spurs have been repaired. The bores are bright and smooth. The stock is in wonderful shape. LOP is 13 ½”.
