250+ Year Old ENGRAVED Flintlock .60 MANSTOPPER

Here we present an antique Engraved Joseph Griffin English Flintlock Pistol, made sometime before the start of the American Revolutionary War in London, England. Joseph Griffin opened his business in 1739 on Bond Street London and went into partnership with Tow in 1773 to form the well-known gunmakers Griffin and Tow. That puts a bracket on the possible production date for this gun, which would be somewhere between 1739 and 1773. Like almost all pistols of this period, it would have been made and sold as a pair, and indeed the underside of the barrel has the number “1” stamped on it. With this pistol being from the Revolutionary War era, it was possibly, if not likely, carried over by a British officer or soldier coming to stop the rebellion of the American Colonies. The pistol appears to be all original and would have been privately purchased to carry as a “back-up” to his musket. It has a massive .60 caliber bore, which would be a great deterrent to anyone looking at the barrel pointing at his chest.

Then, as is now, rifles and muskets were the primary arm of the day, useful for everything from hunting to combat. Pistols were certainly not as numerous but still very useful for combat since most firearms at this time were limited to a single shot. Imagine if one discharged their single shot firearm only to miss or have another enemy close the distance. A man expecting trouble might carry as many pistols on his person as he could. According to some estimates, European and English rifles during this era were made at a ratio of 250:1 over pistols, making these rare and highly coveted.

The overall condition is fine. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth and quite clean for its age. Grip is solid. London proofed. This one has a nicely cast and engraved grotesque mask pommel and thumb plate.
