PENNSYLVANIA Antique H SPERL .38 Caliber SUPERPOSED Over/Under Double Rifle
Made in SUSQUEHANNA DEPOT, PA
Here we present an antique H. Sperl Back Action Superposed Over/Under Percussion Double Rifle, manufactured circa 1870 in Susquehanna Depot, Pennsylvania. Henry Sperl was an active gunmaker in Susquehanna Depot, Pennsylvania from roughly 1869 to 1875, though he almost certainly had a longer career than what has been recorded or yet discovered. This Double Rifle features superposed barrels in .38 caliber. Each barrel has its own hammer and ramrod for loading. There are two ramrods, one on each side of the barrels.
The top barrel flat is maker marked “H Sperl/Susqa Depot PA”. The barrels have one third length ramrod channels left and right. There is a simple single spur German silver trigger guard, crescent butt and toeplates with a pendulum style German silver patchbox. It sports a nice walnut stock that has a flared left side cheekpiece with a fancy inlaid swirl of German silver. This would have been a fine rifle for the frontier.
The overall condition is fine. Original finish/patina. The action is excellent. The bores are both sharply rifled and in very good condition. The stock is solid.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 33 inches.
Caliber: .38 Percussion
