Beautiful MATCHED BRACE of ENGRAVED French DUELERS

Here we present an antique Pair of antique Aury Percussion Dueling Style Pistols, made circa the mid-1800s in St. Etienne, France, sometime after the percussion firing system was introduced. French gunmaker Pierre-Louis Aury was an inspector at the Mutzig Arsenal starting in 1808 and controller in 1814. He became the controller at the arsenal in Chatellerault in 1831 to 1832, the in St. Etienne, and retired in 1838. His son, Louis Aury, worked in St. Etienne starting in 1820 and became an award winning gunmaker and remained active until somewhere around 1879.

Purpose-built dueling pistols have various improvements to make them more reliable and accurate, such as longer and heavier barrels, spurs on the trigger guards, occasionally saw handles, platinum-lined touch-holes and hair triggers. All component parts were manufactured, hand-finished and then adjusted with great care and precision, which made dueling pistols much more costly than standard firearms of the period. Special care was taken when molding the lead bullets to ensure that there were no voids which would affect accuracy. Pistols were carefully and identically loaded, and each duelist was offered his choice of the indistinguishable loaded pistols. As duels were generally fought at short distances which were paced out, typically 35 to 45 feet between stationary opponents, extreme accuracy was not required.

The overall condition is fine. Excellent action. Both bores are rifled and in fine shape. Smooth finished wood with intricate graining. Sharp markings and engravings.
