c1700s BRESCIAN ITALIAN Style Antique .50 Cal. FLINT SNAPHAUNCE Belt Pistol
ENGRAVED Mid-18th Century SNAPHAUNCE FLINTLOCK Pistol
Here we present an antique Italian Snaphaunce Belt Pistol made circa the 18th Century. This is a fairly small pistol with 5-inch long barrel in .50 caliber, perfectly capable in a self-defense scenario. Typical of Brescian firearms of this period is the engraved hardware, to include the side plate and the pommel cap. Though likely made in Brescia, this pistol may have been sold in many places throughout Europe as Brescia was an ancient firearms-making center and remains so today.
The snaphaunce is one of the earlier forms of flint and steel ignition and was introduced in the mid-16th century. It remained in use in Northern Italy into the mid-18th century giving it a particularly long period of use. Ornate pistols such as this remain comparably hard to find and very desirable. This pistol appears to be from the latter portion of the snaphaunce’s period of use and was almost certainly made in or near Brescia in Northern Italy as it has the metalwork the region’s pistols are known for. The belt hook is fitted via the rear lock screws on the left side of the pistol.
The overall condition is very good. Nice patina throughout. The action is excellent. The sliding pan cover and frizzen work well. The bore is smooth and dim. The stock has been repaired around the top of the wrist, all the way around.
