Product Description

OHIO Marked WAR of 1812 Antique U.S. HARPERS FERRY M1795 FLINTLOCK Musket

“1815” Dated Musket used into the CIVIL WAR

Here we present an antique U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1795 Flintlock Musket, manufactured circa 1815 at the Harpers Ferry Armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. This example is marked “HARPERS/FERRY/1815” in three vertical lines at the rear of the plate and was one of 5,340 completed that year at the armory. It also has “OHIO” marked ahead of the sunken oval proofs at the upper left breech of the barrel, indicating the musket was distributed to that state under the militia act of 1808, which annually supplied the states with muskets, or their monetary equivalent in other arms based on the numbers of enrolled militia and later on population. An 1860 Ohio report counted only 5,204 muskets still in state hands out of 27,967 acquired from the U.S. government from 1808 through 1860. Many, perhaps most, of the missing muskets, departed out of state hands through issue to local militia who then damaged, lost, or simply failed to return them, or by inadequate paperwork. The state arsenal also privately sold quantities of obsolete arms after the Civil War and might have been doing so earlier.

The Model 1795 was a smooth bore, flintlock based musket and the first weapon system to be produced within the United States. It was designed very closely patterning the French “Charleville” Flintlock Musket that was used to by the colonists against the British during the American Revolutionary War. Muskets made at Harpers Ferry proceeded along with their own evolutional development and were different from those longarms made at the Springfield Armory.

The overall condition is good. Original brown patina. The bore is in good shape for its age. The trigger does not drop the hammer. The top jaw is missing. “OHIO” marked barrel. “1815” dated lock. This example has been shortened. Here is a scarce flintlock musket that has endured the test of time!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 31-5/8 inches.

Caliber: .69 Flintlock

Overall condition as seen in photos.
