Nice WINCHESTER M64 Lever Action .32 Winchester Special C&R Sporting Rifle
FIRST YEAR PRODUCTION Winchester < 67,000 Produced
Here we present a C&R Winchester Model 64 Lever Action Rifle manufactured in New Haven, Connecticut in 1933. Production began in late 1932, and in 1933, Winchester introduced the Model 64 lever-action rifle as an evolved version of the 53 and 55 Winchester rifles. The Model 64 was available in .30 WCF (30-30), .32 Winchester Special, .25-35, and .219 Zipper (1938-1941) calibers. This rifle could be ordered with a round 24 or 20-inch barrel, the wood walnut, plain or checkered, with a pistol-grip stock and shotgun buttplate. The frame and barrel were blued and had a solid feature with a forged front sight. There were two variants offered, which were the “Standard Rifle”, as is this example, and the “Deer Rifle”. Many collectors refer to the Deer Rifle as a “Deluxe” that came with sling swivels, a steel pistol-grip cap, a checkered buttstock and forend, and if desired, double set triggers. Production of the Model 64 ended in late 1957, with an estimated 66,783 manufactured.
The .32 Winchester Special (or .32 WS) is a rimmed cartridge created in October 1901 for use in the Winchester Model 1894 lever-action rifle. It is similar in name but unrelated to the .32-20 Winchester cartridge (which is also known as .32 WCF). This cartridge is based on the .30-30 Winchester cartridge of 1895, but differs from the .30-30 in bullet diameter. More significantly, Winchester decreased the rate of rifling twist in their Model 94 rifle, from 1:12 when chambered for the .30-30 to 1:16 when chambered for the .32 Winchester Special. Winchester used the slower twist to reduce fouling retention when creating a new cartridge for sportsmen who wanted to reload their own ammunition using black powder and cast bullets.
The overall condition is nearing fine. Some original finish is present on the barrel and magazine tube. Strong, crisp action. The bore is semi-bright with nice rifling. This example sports a solid stock with normal wear, and a couple gouges from use. The left side of the receiver is drilled and tapped. Markings are legible throughout.
