Nice KOLB Folding Trigger “NEW BABY” M1911 Hammerless .22 RF C&R Revolver
ROARING TWENTIES ERA Self Defense Revolver
Here we present a C&R Kolb “New Baby” Hammerless Folding Trigger .22 Caliber Rimfire Revolver, made circa the late 1910s to early 1920s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This design seems to have originated with the company Foehl & Weeks, though they probably did not have the opportunity to begin production before they went bankrupt. The Columbian Firearms Manufacturing Company, as the company was renamed, is thought to have produced the first examples. However, it was Henry Kolb, an immigrant from Germany, who was given the 1910 patents that are marked on this gun, therefore his name is most associated with it. This piece was most likely manufactured by Reginald F. Sedgley (b. 1876), an English immigrant to Philadelphia in 1894, who was a machinist, gunsmith and gun maker. He bought out Kolb in 1916.
The Model 1911 was based on Kolb’s patent #995,156 of 1911. It was distinguished by a square butt, like the Model 1910 Baby Hammerless, and the new barrel release catch which was the subject of Kolb’s patent. The left side button was pressed to the right to release the barrel and eject the cartridges. Probably more than 90% of the Model 1911s were nickel plated, and about a third of them had pearl grips. The Model 1911 was marked: NEW BABY / MOD. 1911 PATS.4.5.10,6.18.11. This is the most common New Baby model, with an estimated production of about 20,000. Duplicate serial numbers are common.
This tiny .22 revolver features hard rubber grips and a nickel finish. The hammer is enclosed and the trigger folds up, making it advantageous to carry and even shoot from a jacket pocket. You can imagine that, then as now, a person might want a small firearm with which to defend themselves. Tiny revolvers were the order of the day ever since Smith & Wesson introduced the single action No. 1. Double action revolvers were the next evolution as the 19th became the 20th Century. The Baby Hammerless was small and light, thus easy to carry, and 6 shots of .22 is far better than nothing in most situations.
Overall condition is fine. Bright and reflective, original nickel finish. Strong action. The bore is in very good shape for its age. Both grips are in great shape with less than average handling, although the left grip is missing a chip from the butt. Sharp markings.
