NEW YORK CONTRACT Antique REMINGTON Rolling Block Model 1871 MILITIA Rifle
INDIAN WARS Era Rolling Block w/SAFTEY LOCKING Action
Here we present an antique State of New York Contract Remington Rolling Block Militia Rifle, made circa 1872 in Ilion, New York. The Remington Rolling Block rifle is a breech-loading rifle that was produced from the mid-1860s into the early 20th century by E. Remington and Sons (later Remington Arms Company).
The state of New York purchased about 15,000 rolling block rifles and carbines from Remington circa 1872. These can be distinguished by the extremely high curved hammer spur, thumb lever for the breechblock that protrudes outward instead of up and the safety locking action which automatically returns the hammer to half cock when the breech is closed. They used the standard Remington military round top, rolling block action with a 36-inch round barrel in .50-70 Center Fire caliber. The upper tang has the standard three-line Remington address/patent dates. The Remington Rolling Block would serve New York until the 1890s, and sources indicate these rolling blocks served with New York Militiamen deployed out West during the Indian Wars.
The overall condition is good. Nice brown patina. Strong action. Bright, nicely rifled bore. This example sports a well-used stock with average wear. The address on the barrel tang is obfuscated.
