Here we present an antique Full Stock Percussion Mule Ear Long Rifle, made circa the 1840s. The Mule Ear lock was invented in the United States somewhere around the mid-1830s. The history is a bit obscure as to who, where, and when the first one was made, but they are generally found in the northern states from New York to Michigan.
This piece has an octagonal barrel is in .42 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. This one has a full-length stock with beautiful striped maple grain. The stock is inset with a large pierced patchbox with a bullet or cigar shaped door.
The overall condition is very good. Plum patina throughout. The action is excellent and strong. The bore is strongly rifled and untouched. The stock shows some use and remains solid throughout with some very minor hairline splits.
