Mid-1800s Antique GILLESPIE 12 Gauge Double Barrel SxS Percussion SHOTGUN
British Shotgun Likely Imported to the United States
Here we present an antique British Gillespie Double Barrel Side by Side Sidelock Percussion Shotgun, manufactured circa the mid-1800s in Birmingham, England. This shotgun could likely have been imported to the U.S. just prior to the American Civil War.
During this era, there were many English and Belgian gunmakers who were capitalizing on the eager markets in the United States. This 12 gauge shotgun was made in a great gauge to go after high flying geese and ducks. Its mid-length 33-1/2 inch barrel made for easy hunting in the dense woods or traipsing through the marsh looking for ducks and geese. This would have been a staple of most homesteads hanging over the mantle during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s. Its primary purpose would have been for putting food on the table or preventing unwanted aggression against the homestead.
The overall condition is very good. Strong action. Original, even brown patina. Semi-bright, smooth bores. Checkered wrist and overall solid stock, contains an average amount of handling wear. Sharp markings. Engraved lock.
