Product Description

Matched, Cased English CLOUGH & SONS DUELERS

Mid-19th Century Pistols in Fitted Case

Here we present an antique Cased Pair of Clough & Sons Percussion Dueling Pistols, made circa the 1850s in Bath, England. The Cloughs put out some fine weaponry and these matched pistols are no exception. They are quality through and through. The family business of gunmaking began circa 1812 and continued within the family until about 1940, at which time the business was sold to another gunmaking family, Gallyon & Sons, whose claim to gunmaking goes back to 1784. John Clough Senor had a shop on Southgate Street in Bath as late as 1846. In 1852 the business was running under the name Clough & Sons, as his oldest son Thomas had completed his apprenticeship and John Jr. was also learning the art of gunmaking. Upon their father’s death in 1860, the brothers changed their business name to Clough Brothers and moved to 9 Bond Street. This gives us a fairly short window for these pistols, marked Clough & Sons, to have been made.

Each pistol features a gold-banded Damascus twist barrel marked on top with the family trademark “CLOUGH/& SONS/BATH” in gold. The barrels are octagonal and the smooth bores measure .53 caliber, true manstoppers built for the purpose. The front sights are beads and rear sights are notched. The locks are also marked “CLOUGH & SONS” and finely engraved, along with the barrel tangs and trigger guards. The stocks are finely hand checkered. The ramrods are tipped with brass. The case is fitted specifically for these pistols and include cast lead balls, powder flask and tools. The case itself is lined in green velvet. This is a high quality & classy set that was made for the higher end customer in the mid-19th Century.

The overall condition is near fine. The barrels retain their Damascened twist pattern and gold embellishments. The markings are clear and the engravings are sharp. The stocks are in fine shape. The bores are smooth. The action is excellent on both pistols.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 5-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .53 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
