LION POMMEL Belt Pistol by WILLIAM HOLLIS of CHELTENHAM England .54 Caliber
c1840s ENGLISH Sidearm Antique
Here we present an antique William Hollis Sidehammer Percussion Pistol, made circa the 1840s-50s in Cheltenham, England. William Hollis had a gun shop on the High Street in Cheltenham between 1829 and 1856. This little self-defense pistol would have been most at home in the waistband or pocket of anyone in the busy cities of London or Paris during the tumultuous 1800s.
This pistol is small, light and simple in function. It is certainly a large step up regarding aesthetic. It features a distinctive lion’s face cast & engraved pommel, fine engraving on the brass frame and the hammer, and a captive ramrod—always a nice feature to prevent loss of a vital component. There is a belt hook mounted to the left side. The barrel is octagonal and .54 caliber. Hints of silver finish remain on the pommel cap. The barrel is London proofed and marked “HOLLIS-CHELTENHAM” on the top flat. There is a small silver thumb plate atop the hand-checkered grip.
The overall condition is very good. Excellent action. The smooth bore is in very good shape. Sharp checkered grip. Here is a handsome pistol that would have gotten the job done with some panache!
