Here we present an antique Factory Lettered Colt Black Powder Frame Single Action Army Revolver, manufactured in 1887 in Hartford, Connecticut. This one letters with the 4 3/4” inch barrel. It was originally blued. It went to the dealers Hartley & Graham in New York City in June of 1887 with 4 others.

Though Colt enjoyed the largest contracts of any handgun maker during the American Civil War, it had to rely on its array of percussion fired revolvers, namely the 1860 Army until the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent expired in 1869. This enabled them to begin making revolvers with completely bored through cylinder chambers in order to utilize modern metallic cartridge ammunition in the most effective manner. In 1869, Colt began development of a suitable cartridge revolver in earnest, first coming out with a number of conversions for their percussion lines, until 1872 when they debuted what was to become the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army in the 1872 U.S. Trials. Needless to say, it won, and became the Army’s revolver of choice. It also became the sidearm of choice for many others like cowboys, guards, lawmen, crooks, shopkeepers and all manner of civilians.

The included factory letter states that the revolver was shipped to Hartley and Graham in New York, New York on June 2, 1887, with a 4 3/4 inch barrel, blue finish, and type of stocks not listed. This was a 5 gun shipment. In 1860, Schuyler, Hartley & Graham was the largest firearms dealer in the United States. Jacob Rutsen Schuyler (1816-1887), Marcellus Hartley (1828-1902) and Malcolm Graham (1832-1899) incorporated their company on March 1, 1854. In 1876 Schuyler retired from the company and by 1880 they changed the name to Hartley and Graham. Malcolm Graham died in December 1899 and the company was reincorporated as M. Hartley Company. Marcellus Hartley died on January 8, 1902.

The overall condition is good. Refinished in nickel. The action holds all three positions and has all four clicks. The bore is dim with serviceable rifling. The left panel of the faux ivory grips has a chip at the heel and toe, otherwise, the grips are solid. Numbers match on the grip frame, trigger guard and frame.
