Late-1700s British READ Antique BRASS BARRELED Flintlock BLUNDERBUSS
200+ Year Old WAR of 1812 Era Close Range Weapon
Here we present an antique British Read Marked Flintlock Blunderbuss, made circa the late 1700s likely in Aylsham, England. The blunderbuss is a firearm with a short, large caliber barrel. They are flared at the muzzle, frequently throughout the entire bore, and used with shot and other projectiles. The blunderbuss is commonly considered to be an early predecessor of the modern day shotgun, with similar military and defensive use. It was effective only at short range, lacking accuracy at long range.
The overall condition is fine. The action is excellent. Original flintlock. The bore is smooth and dim. The stock shows use and remains solid throughout. There is a repair under the tail of the lock and a short, stable split forward of the rear screw head on the left stock flat. The ramrod is a very nice replacement, tipped in horn. London proofs.
