LARGE Antique BELGIAN “Sea Service” .69 Caliber FLINTLOCK Military Pistol
.69 Caliber Pistol Made Circa 1840s in Liege
Here we present an antique Dutch/Belgian “Sea Service” Flintlock Pistol, made circa the 1840s in Liege. This was made in Liege, Belgium, one of the largest weapons-making centers of the world for several centuries. Liege was a parcel of the Netherlands until their revolution in the 1830s. This pistol was made around that time.
This pistol features a large .69 caliber bore, typical of a military small arm of the period. The pommel is a flat one with a lanyard ring. The underside of the barrel is marked with a Liege proof. No provision for a ramrod was made as the user carried one secured to his belt. This would have been one of the last large, smooth bore flintlock pistols to be made for official service before pistols in the percussion firing system and then shortly after cartridge firearms were introduced and adopted.
The overall condition is good. Untouched patina. The action is strong. Bore is in good shape: smooth and dark. Solid stock all around with a sliver off the right side of the barrel. “BELGIUM” is stamped atop the barrel with a Liege proof mark over the breech. Here is an impressive flintlock pistol for the collection.
