Classic Lever Action Repeating Rifle!

Here we present a C&R J.M. Marlin Model 1894 Rifle in .25-20 Marlin, made circa 1903 in New Haven, Connecticut. Marlin was one of Winchester’s biggest competitors for the lever action market in the late-19^th and into the 20^th Century. Originally patented on August 1, 1893 by L.L. Hepburn, the 1894 featured a new locking bolt and two-piece firing pin, alongside an improved one-piece trigger and a short receiver that allowed cartridge compatibility with the 1888 and 1889 models. It features a solid top frame with side ejection and a smooth action.

In 1905, the Model 1894 nomenclature changed to “Model 94”. As with many early Marlins, serial number records for the Model 1894 are incomplete. The inletted “Bull’s Eye” in the stock began in 1921. The barrels of the pre-1924 Model 94s is stamped “Marlin Firearms Company.” Post-1924 barrels were stamped “Marlin Firearms Corporation.”

The Model 1894 and its successors found particular favor in Canada, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest, where precipitation combined with cold temperatures sometimes caused top-eject designs to freeze solid. During the Klondike Gold Rush, the solid-top Marlin design was preferred by many prospectors facing subzero temperatures and dangerous animals, since the solid top frame was better at keeping freezing rain, snow and dirt out of the operating parts of the action.

The overall condition is fine. Much of the original barrel finish remains, although some has aged to a rich brown patina. The action is excellent, and the bore appears dark. This particular piece exhibits signs of typical usage, including a few dings and handling wear on the stock. The markings are clear and legible.
