J.L. GALEF Marked SPANISH Side x Side DOUBLE BARREL .44 Caliber C&R Pistol
.44 XL Double Barrel Self Defense Pistol
Here we present a J.L Galef Spanish Double Barrel Pistol, made circa 1929 in Eibar, Spain. J. L. Galef was a New York importer that brought a lot of Spanish made handguns into the United States during the 1920s to early 1930s. He was also the exclusive representative of the Whitney revolvers. Galef began as a gun salesman at 17 and before the turn of the century founded his company JL Galef & Son. This pistol was actually more popular in South America than it was in the United States. This would have likely been intended as a self-defense gun. The grip is solid walnut. This pistol is small enough to be worn on one’s belt, carried in a jacket pocket or within the muff of a dignified lady during the tumultuous roaring twenties into the Great Depression era. You’d be hard pressed to leave home without it!
The overall condition is good. The action is strong and tight, with no wiggle at the hinge. The bores are bright! Expected wear is present on the checkered wood grips. The barrel is dated “1929”. “J.L. GALEF” is stamped a top the right barrel. Here is an interesting Spanish pistol that has travelled well, withstanding the test of time!
