ITALIAN Antique LANONE Pistol .54 Caliber FLINTLOCK Engraved Ornate 1700s
18th Century Sidearm Decorated with Busts
Here we present an antique Italian D. Lanone Flintlock Pistol, made circa the 1700s. Though worn, it is decorated with busts on the pommel cap, trigger guard, side plate, and barrel. The bottom edge of the lock is signed by the maker.
The bore is .54 caliber. Flintlock pistols were used as both military and self-defense weapons. Their effective range was much shorter than a musket and they were frequently used in combination with sword or cutlass. This is a neat old pistol and one can easily imagine the sight of its gaping bore would certainly be a deterrent to would be scoundrels and ne’er do wells. It was made primarily for self-defense, especially in cities or traveling around the countryside.
The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and patinated. The carved stock is in very good condition. There is a short split along the grain underneath the barrel inside the ramrod channel. Solid otherwise.
