Product Description

IDENTIFIED CIVIL WAR Allen & Wheelock .32 Revolver

Belonging to Massachusetts Militiaman

Here we present an exquisite antique Allen & Wheelock .32 Caliber Revolver, made circa 1862 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Only 1,000 are believed to have been made. This one is in excellent condition and is neatly inscribed on the bottom of the grip strap as belonging to “G.H. Adams Co C 44th Reg”. This revolver belonged to Private George H. Adams of Company C 44th Massachusetts State Militia Infantry Regiment. Adams volunteered in 1862 and fought through to the end of the war, though he transferred to the 3rd Massachusetts Cavalry in mid-1863. Please see the battle unit details for both the 44th Mass Infantry and 3rd Mass Cavalry in the photos section. Both of these units extensive action on many different fields of battle during the American Civil War, some notable ones being Washington and New Orleans.

This revolver is a rarity in itself, being one of only 1,000 produced, and with 8 distinct variants. The cylinder scene is that of dogs chasing a rabbit through the hilly countryside. This scene was not always included and were usually lightly rolled such that these scenes rarely survived to today. As noted above, the bottom of the grip frame is inscribed with Pvt. Adams’ name and his first unit. The grips are antique ivory and the entirety of the revolver has been silver plated. This is truly a magnificent piece of history.

This very revolver sold about 10 years ago at the prestigious James D. Julia auction house for $4,600. Given how much these investments have grown, this revolver represents a wonderfully preserved, very rare revolver, identified to a specific soldier for a great value!

Overall condition is very fine. The silver finish is virtually complete. The markings, inscription and cylinder scene are all very clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The ivory grips are smooth and in good condition. The bore is sharp and strong. The action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 4 inches.

Caliber: .32 Rimfire

Overall condition as seen in photos.
