HOLLER World War 2 GERMAN THIRD REICH Lion Head Officer’s Sword w/SCABBARD
Gold Painted HILT and BLACK ENAMEL SCABBARD
Here we present a World War II German Army 1889 Pattern Lion Head Sword, made by F.W. Höller in Solingen, Germany circa the World War II era. This 1889 Pattern lion head sword would have been worn by a German Army officer during the period 1938-1945. The sword features the classic low profile lion’s head pommel, featuring twin “ruby” set eyes and a wire wrapped black ivorine grip with full wire wrap, mounted onto a stylized and decorative gilded brass back strap and ‘p’ shaped guard. The Langet shows an outstretched NSDAP eagle and swastika.
Generally speaking, swords were not extremely practical for combat by the time the Second World War came around. However, they were still prized for dress uniforms and status symbols. They were worn at formal ceremonies, weddings, parties, parades and funerals. The Wermacht, Kriegsmarines, Luftwaffe, and various other Third Reich departments each had their own swords and styles.
