Product Description

HEIDELBERG Antique BAUERNFEIND Combination 16 Gauge .54-.56 Caliber GERMAN

GAME SCENE ENGRAVED

Here we present an antique German F. Bauernfeind Side x Side Back Action Hammer Rifle & Shotgun Cape Gun, manufactured circa 1880 Heidelberg, Germany. These were typically high-end hunting weapons that featured a side by side configuration with one barrel rifled and the other smooth. The hunter would use the rifled barrel to fire long range, precise shots against large game and the smooth side could be loaded with a large ball or slug for a quick follow up shot, especially on large and dangerous game. Or the smooth bore could be loaded with shot to make it feasible to hunt fowl at the same time without carrying multiple guns. The gun has two triggers to allow either barrel as needed.

This gun features Damascus twist barrels with the smooth bore 16 gauge on the left and the .54-.56 caliber rifled barrel on the right. Double triggers with the rifle trigger being a single set adjustable precision trigger. Underlever breech-loader. The frame and locks are beautifully engraved. Hand-checkered straight grip on a stock with handsome grain. The trigger guard is supplemented with the horn extension that makes a sort of pistol grip. Sling swivels under the barrels and the butt stock. The top rib of the barrels is marked by the maker “F. BAUERNFEIND HEIDELBERG. NO. 34. JNGRIMSTRASSE”.

This gun was made for black powder cartridges. The rifle cartridge has not yet been identified but the approximate dimensions of the chamber are: .628” chamber diameter, .680” rim diameter, chamber length to rifling 1.558”. The diameter of the muzzle is: .540” from land to land and .560” from groove to groove.

The overall condition is near fine. Original finish/patina. Excellent engravings. Strong action. Bright bores. Solid stock with less than average wear. Detailed engravings. Sharp markings. Each barrel has a few small dings. A portion of the shotgun muzzle is dented.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
