GETTYSBURG MARKED Civil War VETERAN’S SWORD
Here we present an antique Grand Army of the Republic Officer’s Gettysburg Marked Parade/Dress Sword. This style of sword was intended for presentation and meant to impress others with its flashy style. This sword was made for a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) serving out of Bacon Post 53 out of Utica, New York. The Grand Army of the Republic Utica Bacon Post 53 was chartered on October 24, 1867, in memory of 1st Lt. William K. Bacon, Adjutant, Co. F, 26th NYSV. Bacon joined in April of 1861 and died in battle on December 15, 1862.
The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army (United States Army), Union Navy (U.S. Navy), and the Marines who served in the American Civil War. It was founded in 1866 in Decatur, Illinois, and grew to include hundreds of “posts” (local community units) across the North and West. It was dissolved in 1956 at the death of its last member, Albert Woolson.
The blade is hand marked “Gettysburg Pa. July 4, 1863 – Bacon Post 53 G.A.R. on the right side”.
This sword has been refinished with a bronze coating. The hilt is solid. The blade is straight. The markings are hand painted. A split is present in the wooden grip, but it remains seated firmly.
Blade Length is 36-1/2 inches.
