GOLD ETCHED Blue Niter CIVIL WAR BLADE Infantry Officer’s Sword w/SCABBARD
MILITARY Saber SILVER PLATED BRASS HILT & BONE GRIP
Here we present an antique Infantry Officer’s Pattern Saber, manufactured circa the mid-1800s. This style of sword was popularized during the American Revolutionary War and was one of the signature weapons of the young United States through the War of 1812 and well beyond.
On swords where the motifs/displays are still visible, the actual branch of service the sword was intended for can be determined. Artillery swords would display panels depicting cannons. Infantry would normally display panels depicting an infantryman’s rifle. Cavalry blades would indicate mounted horsemen. Militia officers also carried these types, and their blade motif could be something all encompassing, such as a panoply of arms.
This example is equipped with a blade with gold washed etching on a niter blue field, a brass guard, a ribbed bone grip, and a leather scabbard.
The overall condition is fair to good. The blade has a slight wave about midway. Very nice original fire blue and gold finishes with crisp etching. Handsome eagle head pommel. The handguard has become detached from the pommel and there is some rotational movement around the tang. Solid bone grip. The leather scabbard is in relatively poor condition but has protected the blade all these years. Markers mark “Warranted A.Berger”.
Overall length: 34-3/4 inches.
Blade length: 29-5/8 inches.
