GERMAN Antique P. ARNETH Double Barrel BACK ACTION PINFIRE Hammer Shotgun
Nicely ENGRAVED and CHECKERED 20 Gauge HAMMER GUN
Here we present an antique P. Arneth Pinfire Double Barrel Back Action Side by Side Hammer Shotgun, manufactured circa the 1850s in Mergentheim, Germany. This shotgun is nicely engraved with checkered stocks. The pinfire cartridge was invented by Casimir Lefaucheux in 1836 and is considered to be the first self-contained firearm cartridge. It enjoyed a relatively long life compared to other cartridges developed only a few years later. During this era, there were many English and Belgian gunmakers who were capitalizing on the eager markets in the United States.
These locks were called “back action” because the mainspring hangs behind the tumbler. The back action is often used in double rifles and occasionally in single barrel shotguns where the need for strength requires as little steel as possible be removed from the bar of the action.
The overall condition is good. Original Damascus pattern, finish and patina. The right action will hold half cock but not full cock. The left action is excellent. The bores are dim with scattered light pitting. The stock shows use and remains solid. The screw at the very rear of the top tang is absent. The front of the ebony pistol grip is split.
