FRENCH REVOLUTIONARY Period LIBREVILLE Model 1763 FLINTLOCK CAVALRY Pistol
Very Scarce “LIBREVILLE” Rather than CHARLEVILLE!
Here we present an antique Revolutionary French Military Model 1763 Flintlock Cavalry Pistol by the Libreville Armory, which was the Charleville Armory renamed during the Reign of Terror circa the 1790s. Approximately 35,000 pairs were ordered from the Charleville Arsenal which had been given the more freedom-friendly name “Libreville” (Freetown) by the revolutionaries. With the passing of the “Reign of Terror” period of the revolution, Libreville returned to its original name of Charleville, and marked the pistols produced from then on as such. This is a fairly late example of the Model 1763 and the only one we have seen yet with this alternate marking.
The barrel tang reads “C 1763”. The lock has “M. de Libreville” engraved. The letter “A” is punched on the inside of the trigger guard. Other faint inspection marks throughout.
The overall condition is very good. Smooth brown patina. The action is strong and tight. The bore is smooth and dark. The stock remains solid and stable despite lots of handling. Vive la Révolution!
